The blurb from the publisher…

Prima ballet dancer Lillian Jackson is all about control—on stage and in bed. Which is precisely why she keeps her hook-ups to one night, and one night only. No strings. No phone numbers. No scones in the morning. There’s no room for mistakes, especially now that her dance company’s survival depends entirely on winning a million-dollar cash prize in one of America’s biggest reality competitions. That is, until one night with a certain curvy, blue-haired siren changes everything . . .

As burlesque dancer “Blue Lenox,” Izzy Wells is the queen of on-stage seduction. Almost no one knows that she’s close to losing everything—her theater, her home, and her troupe—unless she wins this competition. Now she’s going toe-to-toe with a gorgeous ballerina in front of the world. The chemistry between them is hot, but even more distracting are the feelings they’re starting to develop. There’s no way Lillian can fit Izzy into her life, and Izzy knows better than to fall for someone who can’t put her first. But if they can make it through the show with their hearts and dreams intact, they just might win the biggest prize of all.

My thoughts…

Second Night Stand is a captivating novel written by best-selling author Karelia Stetz-Waters and her spouse, Fay. Though Karelia individually has nine novels to her name, she maintains that many of the best ideas came from Fay. Since Fay has been a big part of Karelia’s brainstorming for years, co-authoring a book seemed inevitable. In fact, it was something they had been talking about for quite some time. However, it was paramount to them that their story included things that are important in strong relationships, like healthy communication, especially during sex. They believe it’s sexy to see this kind of communication in sapphic fiction. I agree; I’m glad they made sure to weave it into Second Night Stand’s narrative. It’s what makes it so much fun to read.

Though this is their first collaboration, it doesn’t feel that way at all. I’m sure much of that stems from their familiarity with one another. Together, they have a fresh and unique writing style, one that’s filled with wit and wisdom. Scenes include a charming sense of humor and keen insight. This enables readers to gain a relevant perspective on the complexities of Blue and Lillian’s relationship. In addition to that, their script  flows nicely and allows for emotions to play out organically. This provides the narrative with believability, making the storytelling relatable and reliable.

What stands out most about Karelia and Fay’s style, however, is their vivid and immersive descriptions. Their word smithing makes the story world appear three dimensional. Events and places, especially those that involve the reality show competition, are not only interesting but exciting. As Blue and Lillian navigate the talent show, the Stetz-Waters duo knows just how to use imagery to increase the tension and keep readers invested. Readers can not help but cheer for these two women, making the ride to HEA a roller coaster of fun.

This is a character driven story, and Karelia and Fay do their work here, too. These are strong, independent women, but Karelia and Fay give them relatable flaws and vulnerabilities. These are likable, appealing women that readers enjoy getting to know. However, the writers are cognizant of the fundamentals of character development; they make sure to provide measurable depth and growth while constructing the arcs of these women. Blue and Lillian’s complex portrayal comes off as genuine and authentic, allowing readers to form a connection with them. It doesn’t hurt that their chemistry is off the charts either. Theirs is an unexpected love filled with possibility and passion. Quite simply, their romance resonates, making the journey wholeheartedly worthwhile.

Final remarks…

Second Night Stand gives readers much to appreciate. The storytelling is layered and nuanced, making for a reflective, yet compelling reading journey. The smooth pacing ensures balance between the slower, introspective moments and the faster, exciting scenes. The well-written dialogue is infused with humor. It facilitates a certain degree of levity, making the heavier, emotional moments lighter yet impactive. The characters are well-designed and multi-dimensional; they more than carry their weight. Readers witness their struggles, conflicts, and triumphs, creating a depth and complexity to the storytelling that sticks. This is an excellent first book for the Stetz-Waters team. I look forward to their next collaboration.

Strengths…

  • Strong character development
  • Relatable, reliable storytelling
  • Nice balance of conflict and tension
  • Engaging storyline
  • Diversity and representation

A bit about the authors…

Ambassadors of real-life happily-ever-after, Fay and Karelia Stetz-Waters have been together for twenty-three years. They live in Albany, Oregon with their pug-mix Willa Cather and a garden full of dragonflies and hummingbirds. Their writing process involves many afternoons spent at local coffee shops and brewpubs outlining scenes, going over drafts, and high fiving each other. The process works beautifully. Second-Night Stand is their first novel together but definitely not their last.

The blurb from the publisher…

Enter the exciting world of horse archery with the heavily anticipated new sports romance from award-winning sapphic author Rachel Spangler

Kye Manchester is no stranger to ambition. She sacrificed more than she cares to admit to become a highly acclaimed actress. Now more than a decade after her big break, her prospects are waning, and in a moment of desperation, she tells a lie that sends her spiraling back to where she started, and to the one woman she swore she’d never let herself need again.

Fletcher Bouchard isn’t just Kye’s first love and her greatest heartbreak, she’s also a world-champion mounted archer in a unique position to help Kye gain the skills she needs with a horse and bow, only she has no inclination to do so. Tensions flare immediately after Kye returns to their small hometown, and neither woman knows how to back down where the other is concerned. Driven, wounded, and resentful, they also happen to be the only person in each other’s lives who understands how to walk the razor’s edge between sanity and obsession.

The two women reluctantly agree to work together under the common goal of getting back to the lives they each built in spite of the other. However, during long days and nights of training, embers of the past rekindle fires hot enough to incinerate their defenses. As arrows and tempers fly, will passion burn hot enough to push Kye and Fletcher past old patterns in search of true healing? Or will the sharp point of lingering pain shatter their second chance at the love story of a lifetime?

Quiver is an enemies-to-lovers, ice queen romance about the power of love, redemption, and the choices that make us who we are.

My thoughts…

Quiver is one powerful love story! It had me feeling all kinds of things—frustration, compassion, joy, and finally, satisfaction. Spangler really takes readers on a journey with this one, and it is so worth it. They experience an emotional connection with the characters, making it a completely absorbing read. For those who have ever loved another intensely and consumingly, it resonates in intimately familiar ways.

Spangler impressed me with this novel. Not only is it well-written, but it’s emotionally in touch with the realities of first loves and complex relationships. It’s not rushed, ensuring that the character arcs are authentically built. Spangler focuses on contrasting but relatable experiences that allow Kye and Fletcher to evolve organically. Furthermore, Spangler avoids predictable stereotypes and emphasizes the characters’ emotions in a nuanced and meaningful way. The result is a compelling and affecting narrative, and it’s hard to put down.

Final remarks…

As per usual, Spangler does their homework and creates a rich, vivid story world for readers to explore and enjoy. Their veritable and detailed descriptions paint a setting and storyline that feels credible and true. This attention to detail provides readers with dependable, investable characters—ones with genuine depth. Kye and Fletcher’s struggles, triumphs, and relationships are portrayed with veracious modulation and definable shading, allowing readers to connect on a personal and emotional level. Furthermore, their well-rounded development addresses significant challenges, showcasing real, genuine growth. This all makes for some reverberating and compelling storytelling, and I highly recommend it.

Strengths…

  • Well-written
  • Compelling, engaging storyline
  • Raw, honest character development
  • A poignant and tender tale

The blurb from the publisher…

What do you get when you combine a sweet cinnamon twist and robust Italian wine? Bestselling author Melissa Brayden’s You Had Me at Merlot, the perfect blend of sugar and spice.

Bordeauxnuts is New York City magic, and it all belongs to Jamie Tolliver. A charming coffee and doughnut spot by day, Bordeauxnuts transforms with a sprinkle of powdered sugar into a cozy sophisticated wine bar each evening. Jamie’s enjoying a blueberry latte with her quirky band of regulars when a stunning and enigmatic stranger saunters in, flips her laptop open, and Jamie’s world upside down. Each time Jamie speaks to Leighton Morrow, her crush multiplies. She’s drawn to Leighton’s captivating presence, her kindness, and the faint lip print she leaves on her cup that winds a tingle up Jamie’s spine.

But sexy spine tingles can be deceiving.

Leighton Morrow didn’t set out to ruin anyone’s life, but she has a job to do. As a development coordinator for Carrington’s Department Store, Leighton’s part of the team that plans to take over the city block for the new location, including demolishing her new favorite café, Bordeauxnuts. A shame, but that’s life. She’ll miss the apple fritters and the cute owner. But work is a No Feelings Zone and she definitely cannot give in to the ones she has percolating for Jamie. Leighton and Jamie have all the ingredients to turn their attraction into love, but it’s a recipe for disaster.

My thoughts…

Melissa Brayden has written 25 full-length novels since she started writing in 2011. Her first book, Waiting in the Wings, is still one of my all-time favorites. In recent years, she’s been producing two to three books each year; that’s quite a pace for an author! I’ve been on ARC teams and proofread for authors for several years now and I understand the time it takes to develop quality storytelling. It’s a tedious process. Yet amazingly, Brayden shoulders through the writing regimen like a champ and churns out one best seller after another. (As I write this, You Had Me at Merlot sits at number one in new releases—impressive!)

So, how does she do it? Obviously, she’s very disciplined and structured in her work ethic. However, that doesn’t fully explain the orange best seller banners on Amazon. The answer to that resides in talent, pure and simple. She’s a natural storyteller; it’s probably baked into her genes. On top of that, she understands what readers want in a romance—to experience the thrill and joy of falling in love. So, she gives them heroines that are relatable—women that are smart, capable, and attractive. Then, she lets readers feel the thrill of capturing another woman’s heart, a journey that is filled with desire and consequence. Hearts get bruised and broken along the way, but readers can always count on Brayden to mend them before they turn the last page.

In You Had Me at Merlot, she has quite a bit of mending to do as hearts really get squeezed. Readers feel their pain as the two take a slow and bumpy ride back to a second-chance. The road is long and readers may want to tug their hair out at times, but the journey is worth it. Each step is emotionally charged, complex and heartfelt, making You Had Me at Merlot a compelling read.

Jamie and Leighton are vintage Brayden characters in that they tick all the boxes. They have: 1) distinct and unique personalities 2) interesting, solid relationships with other characters (be prepared to be delighted by several of Brayden’s backlist characters making their way into the script), 3) compelling, dynamic backstories, 4) realistic goals and motivations, and 5) transformative change. More than all of that though, they are extremely likable. They worm their way into readers’ hearts quickly and make a nice home there. These are women that people are drawn to in real life, flaws and all.

Another thing that makes You Had Me at Merlot a standout is the supporting characters. Brayden has always excelled at creating interesting, unique supporting casts, but this one might be the most memorable. Not only does she use them to develop Jamie and Leighton character arcs, they also help provide subplots, solidify themes, and even offer comic relief. These characters serve as love interests, friends and family members who create the side dishes for the main course, the romance. In general, they just make the story more interesting; they aren’t just background chatter. They are fully realized individuals with their own personalities, dovetailing seamlessly into the plot and not overshadowing it. The story is richer because of them, making it a more dynamic read in the end.

Final remarks…

You Had Me at Merlot is filled with fun, flirty banter and cute moments. Beware: this is a journey, though. It takes a minute for the girl to get the girl. However, that’s what I appreciated about it; it gave Jamie and Leighton time to fully develop, paving the road for a more believable romance in the end. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys honest, vulnerably told, second-chance romances. It’s absolutely worth the read.

Strengths…

  • Engaging storyline
  • Enjoyable, well-crafted narrative
  • Lovely, well-developed characters
  • Fantastic secondary characters
  • Cleverly planted “Easter Eggs”
  • Heartfelt and emotionally sincere dialogue

A spicy age gap romance where one night of passion could lead to a lifetime of love.

In a small town teetering on the brink of collapse, will one woman’s arrival seal a factory’s fate or open the floodgate for love and redemption?

Elle Robinson’s world is literally swept away when a raging flood sends her car careening toward certain doom, only to be rescued by Angela Lane – a spirited, self-reliant, and unexpected savior who pulls Elle back from the edge of calamity.

In the aftermath of their brush with mortality, passions ignite between the two women, mirroring the uncontrollable rise of the floodwaters. However, fate has a wicked sense of humor.

As the storm of their one-night stand recedes, a startling revelation emerges. Angie learns that Elle is the ambitious young business consultant whose arrival could signal the demise of Angie’s cherished family cheesemaking business. Will this city girl bring more destruction than the flood? Or could she evolve into the improbable business partner Angie has been waiting for?

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Vermont, award winning authors TB Markinson and Miranda MacLeod bring you a love story that defies convention, challenges expectations, and may just save an entire town.

My thoughts…

Say Cheese is a charming and witty romance by T.B. Markinson and Miranda MacLeod, featuring two women who fall in love under unlikely circumstances. Elle is a city girl who works as a business consultant, and Angie is a country girl who runs a family cheesemaking business in Vermont. When Elle’s car is swept away by a flood on her way to a wedding, Angie comes to her rescue. Sparks fly between them and their passionate night is followed by a shocking discovery in the light of day: Elle is in town to convince Angie’s family to sell their business to a ruthless corporation. That’s when heads bump and things start to get really interesting.

Markinson and MacLeod are the dream team of sapphic fiction. Everything they write turns to gold. At only 20 days post launch, Say Cheese has been flagged a number one seller for lesbian fiction on Amazon. Sapphic readers can not get their hands on this pair’s new books fast enough.

WLW readers love their stories for several reasons. They have a humorous and witty writing style that makes their books fun and entertaining to read. In addition to that, they create realistic and relatable characters that have chemistry and depth. Readers like their characters and connect with them. They aren’t flat, static characters; they grow and change as the plot progresses. Their various challenges and conflicts make them interesting in ways readers can’t resist. Basically, the bottom line is this: They complement each other’s strengths and skills, facilitating a smooth and appealing narrative for readers each and every time.

Say Cheese more than rings true with all of that. In fact, I would argue it’s one of Markinson and MacLeod’s best joint efforts. Besides being a delightful read, full of humor, chemistry, and heart, its literary constructs are developed with real craftsmanship. To start off with, the duo creates a vivid and cozy story world, one readers can easily slip into. It’s immersive and very “Hallmark” with its colorful cast of supporting characters; make no mistake, these people are a real treat. Readers will especially enjoy Angie’s hilarious family and her lovable St. Bernard. The main characters are also well-developed and likable. Their flaws and struggles are relatable and realistic, hooking readers immediately. Furthermore, the plot is engaging and fast-paced, with a perfect balance of angst and sweetness. Most importantly though, the romance between Angie and Elle is hot, tender and addicting. Their road to HEA is everything a sapphic reader desires.

Final thoughts…

Say Cheese is a must-read for fans of contemporary sapphic romance, especially for those that enjoy age-gap, city girl/country girl and enemies-to-lovers tropes. The take a way is simply; it’s a captivatingly, entertaining story, and it will make you smile.

Strengths…

  • Completely entertaining and humorous
  • Great dialogue
  • Well-written storyline
  • Likable main characters
  • Enjoyable secondary characters
  • Immersive story world

Appalachian Awakening

The details…

  • Title: Appalachian Awakening
  • Author: Nance Sparks
  • Publisher: Bold Strokes Books
  • Publication date: January 16, 2024
  • Available formats: ebook, paperback
  • Digital file size: 1414 KB
  • Print length: 240 pages
  • Genre: contemporary romance
  • Themes: women loving women, class disparity, friendship, adventure, hiking, camping, self-discovery, love, personal growth, the beauty of nature, community, self-actualization, self-awareness, reflection, endurance, the Appalachian Trail
  • Tropes: friends to lovers, opposites attract, rich girl/poor girl

The blurb…

Facing yet another failed relationship and a full-blown identity crisis after losing her job in a corporate merger, unemployed executive Amber Shaw realizes she hasn’t been happy in a long time. Who is she if not a CEO, and if everything she’s worked for hasn’t made her happy, what will? Inspired after learning about the Appalachian Trail, Amber sets off in hopes of figuring it all out.

Leslie Brown lives life on her own terms with nothing to tie her down. She’s an experienced hiker and has one final trail left on her bucket list, the Appalachian Trail. Only problem, all her friends have settled down and started lives that don’t allow for seven months away from responsibilities. She’s out there alone.

Amber and Leslie assume they are polar opposites based on their first impressions of each other, but the more their paths cross, the more this hike of a lifetime begins to look like a love of a lifetime.

My thoughts…

Appalachian Awakening by Nance Sparks is a heartwarming and transformative journey of self-discovery and love set against the backdrop of the Appalachian Trail. The story revolves around Amber Shaw, a young woman yearning for personal fulfillment after losing her high-powered executive job and girlfriend. It shakes her to the core and makes her question who she is and what she wants from life. After a few drinks and a couple of rewinds through the movie Wild, she decides to mimic Cheryl Strayed and search for her own answers on the Appalachian Trail. As she begins her sojourn, she meets Leslie Brown, a seasoned hiker with her own story to tell. Despite their initial differences, they form a deep connection during their months-long journey. Their love story–filled with friendship and the glory of the great outdoors–is as delightful as it is compelling.

Sparks does a fine job constructing this story. She nails down the seven critical elements of story writing like a pro. First and foremost, she creates a well-structured plot that’s developed around clear and solid story mapping. It facilitates an arc that consists of meaningful, relevant, and time-bound plot points, making the storytelling credible. Furthermore, the arc—coupled with Sparks’s well-planned story world—institutes physical challenges and tests of endurance that push introspection and reflection. It all leads to organic tension and true character growth, something that hooks readers until the end.

While Sparks’ story construction is noteworthy, her character development deserves appreciation as well. Amber and Leslie are relatable and multidimensional women with clear, understandable motivations. Readers understand these women; they care about them. Right from the beginning Sparks grabs readers’ emotions by scripting a strong opening and inciting moment, one that unveils both Amber and Leslie’s true desires and fears. Their misguided truths, things they’ve believed all of their adult lives, are slowly unraveled during this trek, making their transformation impactive with the readers.

Even though the main characters do the bulk of the work in Appalachian Awakening, the secondary characters need praise as well. Sparks uses them to create tension and balance within the storytelling. On top of that, these characters work to advance the sub-plot, even giving it a twist. Most importantly though, they provide depth and complexity to the storytelling, making the whole reading experience more memorable. This is especially true of Sue as she fulfills the role of “confidant” in the narrative. Her relationship with Amber–along with her distinct and unique personality traits–elevates the storytelling, making her one character readers won’t soon forget.

Construction and character development aside, Sparks also gets high marks for her style and literary choices. Her descriptive writing is simply enchanting; she skillfully captures the essence of the Appalachian Trail, captivating readers with all its grandeur and wonder. Her immersive prose evokes a strong sense of place with readers, so much so that it’s transportive. One can feel both the splendor and unyielding severity of the wilderness as Amber and Leslie put one foot in front of each other, conquering the 2,190 miles of trail together. Additionally, Sparks’ first-person point of view elevates the storytelling by lending insight into the characters’ thoughts and emotions, thus creating a connection between the readers and the narrative. Her style not only pulls readers into the story world but excites their imaginations, poking at their fantasies and making them wonder what it would be like to achieve what Amber and Leslie did.

Final remarks…

Appalachian Awakening is not just a story—it’s a celebration of the human spirit. Nance Sparks’ descriptive, well-constructed narrative explores the wild, untamed world of the Appalachian Mountains while immersing itself in themes of self-discovery and love, making this book a must-read for sapphic readers and nature lovers. Its rich and vivid portrayal of Amber and Leslie’s journey on the Appalachian Tail is curated with care. Their journey to self-fulfillment and love will leave a lasting impression long after the final page has been turned.

Strengths…

  • Well-written, descriptive prose
  • Immersive story world
  • Emotional and honest dialogue
  • Likable, investable characters
  • Heartwarming romance

A peek inside…

This is awful. Should we stop and pitch our tents?” The air was so cold and damp that my windproof gear didn’t feel like it was living up to its name. I pulled my sleeves down around my clenched fist, trying to retain a touch of body heat.

“With this wind, it would be better to find a shelter. Never know when or where a tree limb could come down. This is looking much worse than what was in the forecast. Do you think you can make it another couple of miles to Low Gap Shelter? It’s seven miles closer than where we planned to sleep.”

“I trust you. I’ll do whatever you think is best.” I pulled my head down and forced myself to plot along.

She slowed her pace until we were side-by-side. How about some conversation to pass the time? Let’s see, how’d you word it back at Springer? ‘I hope I find what I’m looking for, else, I hope I find what I need.’”

“Yeah, it was something like that.” That was exactly how I’d worded it. Should I have been flattered or creeped out that she memorized my trail motto word for word? “What’d you write?”

“An epically original, ‘Last of the scenic eleven,’ followed by my trail name. That was all that I was willing to share with the public.”

“What aren’t you willing to share?” I asked, hoping she would answer, and the uncertainty in my life wouldn’t be the topic of conversation.

“You first. Your words really struck me. What do you hope to find? What wasn’t working in your life back home that a new job and a new girl couldn’t fix?”

“You want to have that conversation right now? Out here in the freezing wind and rain?” I turned to look at Leslie. My hood slapped rhythmically against the side of my face.

“Why not? Do you have somewhere else to be?”

“Are you going to call me a Wild hiker if I say that, at this moment, another job and another girlfriend sounds pretty damn nice?”

“Everything sounds better than trecking when the weather is this cold and nasty, but we’d never finish if we only hiked on the nice days. How would you have answered if I’d ask you yesterday?”

“Can’t you leave it be?”

“Come on, I really want to know. It’s not a tough question.”

“But it is, if I don’t know the answer.” I stopped abruptly and threw my arms in the air. “I don’t know, okay? I don’t know what I hoped to figure out. I don’t know what it is that Isn’t working in my life. I don’t know what I’m looking for or where to find it. I don’t know anything. I just fucking don’t know!” The urge to throw something was instant and overwhelming. I picked up an open pinecone, one that could adorn a festive winter decoration once dipped in sparkling glitter. I cocked my arm back and released it with everything I had. The wind caught it and whipped it right back at me with much more force. A direct hit to my chest. “Jesus. Apparently I don’t even know how to throw a fucking pinecone.”

Instantly, I regretted my outburst. Definitely not the behavior of a seasoned executive. I was sure I looked and sounded as ridiculous as I felt. I half expected Leslie to turn and simply walk away. I certainly would have if I’d been on the other side of that tantrum, Yet, she remained at my side and even reached for my hand. Her touch had an incredible grounding effect.

“I think that’s the realist you’ve been since we met.”

“What do you mean?” Thank goodness for the rain, because I was on the verge of tears.

“You’re edited. You think through every word that comes out of your mouth. Tell me I’m wrong.”

I stared at her, trying to figure out what to say. Well, shit, that totally proved her point. “What do you want from me?”

“I want you to let me in. I want to know the you that no one else gets to know.”

My thoughts…

Georgia Beers’s new romance, Playing with Matches, is a delightful exploration of small town life, family drama, and true love. Beers expertly utilizes the small town setting to create a heartwarming and nostalgic atmosphere, while also crafting a tender love story. The tight-knit nature of the town allows for believable tension and heartfelt joy, providing the perfect backdrop for her characters to grow and change. However, it is Beers’s ability to infuse warmth and tenderness into her settings that truly captivates readers. These moments of hope and promise are the lifeblood of the romance, drawing readers in and keeping them hooked until the very end.

Beers’s love for writing small town romances shines through in Playing with Matches, and it is this passion that elevates the narrative. Set in the fictional town of Crimson Valley, New York, nestled in the picturesque Adirondack Mountains, Liz and Cori navigate the delicate balance between their passions and fears, all while fulfilling their obligations and commitments. The sanctuary of Crimson Valley provides them with a safe space to explore their desires and aspirations, but it is their love for each other, surrounded by the charm of small town life, that gives them the courage to take risks and ultimately find happiness.

While small town tropes may be common in sapphic romances, Beers manages to avoid clichés and instead uses them effectively to enhance her storytelling. The story world seamlessly intertwines with the plot, adding depth and dimension to the narrative. It also allows for an exploration of personal setbacks, making Liz and Cori’s struggles feel authentic and relatable. These flawed yet likable characters draw readers in, and their bittersweet but hopeful romance sets this love story apart from the rest.

Final remarks…

Playing with Matches is a heartwarming and captivating romance that could easily be adapted into a Hallmark movie. Liz and Cori are charming characters with undeniable chemistry, and their sweet and tender small town, “fake-dating” love story is sure to capture the attention of readers. Their journey reminds readers of the importance of love, forgiveness, family, and community, making this feel-good romance a true triumph.

Strengths…

  • Likable characters
  • Immersive story world

Amidst the burgeoning romance, they unearth a secret centuries in the making. But as their bond deepens, they face a choice: embrace a transformative love or make a monumental sacrifice for the greater good.

My thoughts…

Kringle Falls is a romance set in a small town in Upstate New York during Christmas. The storyline provides readers the ability to transport themselves into a world of imagination and wonder. It works elements of speculative fiction and mystery into a narrative that’s heavily infused with the spirit of Christmas, evoking a sense of intrigue and wonder for the reader. Overall, this novel provides an engaging reading experience for one to enjoy.

The author Lynn Oliver Hudson uses the setting of Upstate New York to add a sense of charm and mystique to her storytelling. The quaint town of Kringle Falls, the picturesque landscape and the snowy weather create a magical backdrop for this story to unfold. The north eastern part of the United States is often associated with a sense of nostalgia and tradition anyway, so this makes it the perfect setting for a Christmas-time story. Furthermore, the small-town atmosphere and the close-knit community add a sense of warmth and familiarity to the narrative, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the story.

Besides designing a well-structured setting, Hudson is clever with her story world. She uses it to create the perfect stage for a holiday-themed plot. Christmas is a time of joy, love, and togetherness, and readers feel all of that in this novel. It evokes a sense of nostalgia and warmth, making it the perfect world for a heartwarming romance. The hometown feeling transports readers to an idyllic place adorned with twinkling lights, snow-covered streets and cozy fireplaces. Overall, it adds an extra layer of magic to the story, making the dreamy setting alluring to readers.

Hudson is a debut writer and like so many new writers, she is still learning to hone her craft. However, she understands the importance of setting. She uses it to create a foundation for the most surprising characteristic of this holiday novel: the speculative/paranormal aspect. Hudson works elements of fantasy and supernatural into her narrative and it adds heavy doses of intrigue to her storytelling. Her introduction of the magical and otherworldly creates unique and unexpected plot twists, ones that keep the readers engaged and eager to uncover the mysteries within the story. These elements add excitement and wonder to the narrative, making it all the more enchanting for readers.

It should be mentioned that Hudson employs alternating points of view in her storytelling. It adds a nice depth and complexity to the narrative and allows the reader to see the story from two perspectives. Most importantly though, it helps to create a more immersive experience for the reader. Alternating first person points of view can be tricky, but Hudson pulls it off with relative ease. She develops distinctive character voices, and that helps. Her characters have clear, identifiable voices and the reader is able to differentiate between the characters, making the story fairly easy to follow.

Final remarks…

This Christmas-time romance is unique with its touch of mystery and otherworldly paranormal intrigue. Its homey small town setting provides tons of appeal to captivate readers. The combination of the speculative elements along with the gorgeous Upstate New York setting contribute to the overall enchantment of the novel. Hudson offers a nice blend of romance, intrigue and holiday cheer in her debut that transports readers into a world of imagination and wonder. However, there are points where readers will really have to suspend their belief for this novel to work. It takes some liberties with reality, time and space but the reading experience is entertaining nonetheless.

Strengths…

  • Interesting storyline
  • Surprising twists
  • Interesting characters
  • Festive, small-town setting

A word about the book from the author…

Kringle Falls is the product of watching too many Hallmark Christmas movies that lacked queer representation. My love of Christmas and the paranormal came together when I asked my best friend to give me a topic for a book. Her response was simple and quick, “a librarian with a secret collection.” Sprinkle in a quirky family, a dog who repeatedly steals the show, a life-changing love, and you have Kringle Falls. This magical place will stay with you long after the holiday season.

My thoughts…

Readers will find a lot to appreciate about A Carol for Karol by Ann Roberts. A festive and heartwarming backdrop is wonderfully constructed for this holiday-themed, second-chance romance, providing cozy feelings of joy and Christmas sentimentality that really resonate with readers. Roberts masterfully uses the themes of love, family, and community associated with the holidays to enhance the emotional connection between her main characters, making this romance more than appealing.

These moments allow CJ and Karol to address their past and work towards reconnecting and reconciling with one another, ultimately paving the way to a future neither knew they needed or wanted.

Final remarks…

This is an engaging second chance romance and it resonates with readers. Roberts scripts characters that have evolved and learned from their past mistakes. She ensures they’ll have a successful second chance at love by scripting personal growth and change into the scenes. It’s well written, authentic and original. Its biggest selling point however is that it offers a sense of hope and possibility. Readers find that especially heartwarming, mostly because they can relate to the idea of a second chance at love. They like the idea that it can be rekindled even after a long separation. A Carol for Karol, with its themes of Christmas in a small community, new beginnings and rekindled love, is a lovely read and perfect for the holiday season.

Come along on this rocky romantic adventure and find out if Cory will be swearing at Vi Valdez or will she be swearing her love forever?

My thoughts…

Cory Sloan is Swearing is a family-centric sapphic romance that offers something sweet and heartwarming for its readers. It’s a romance with a small town feel with real appeal. Its characters are not only representative of sapphic women but they showcase how diverse and talented they are. Moody has specifically designed the storytelling around three queer sisters and it’s a choice that offers readers a more inclusive perspective, one that even challenges stereotypes. These storytelling decisions make for an interesting storyline that’s not only relatable but enticing to readers who are looking for something familiar.

Family and community are often comforting themes for sapphic readers. Their close-knit communities provide a cozy yet relatable backdrop for wlw narratives. While these themes can be charming, they can also be challenging, especially for the LGBTQ community. Moody seems to understand all of this. In fact, it’s on full display inside the pages of Cory Sloan is Swearing.

The story line is simple, yet tangled. Cory, the story’s central character, has to navigate her relationships with her sisters as well as those within her community, all while building a new business and cultivating new customers. As if all of that isn’t enough, Cory has to fight a deep attraction to Vi Valdez, a serious threat to her fledgling business. While her relationship with Vi could come at a cost to her bottom line and customer base, it creates a compelling and heated romance. It’s a tale as old as time and begs the question: Can one mix business and pleasure without getting hurt?

There’s much to like about this romance. Readers will especially enjoy the interplay between Cory and her sisters. There is a sense of intimacy and familiarity present and it makes for a more immersive and engaging story. The point of view also plays a role in this. Told in third-person, readers are able to see things for what they are, lending itself to a necessary believability and authenticity. Bottom line, readers care about these characters and it allocates for storytelling that’s genuine as well as connective.

Final remarks…

Moody has done another fine job and sapphic readers will appreciate her efforts. Cory Sloan is Swearing features well-developed characters embroiled in a compelling romance, one filled with real chemistry and challenges. It’s an engaging storyline and readers will melt a bit every time Cory and Vi draw closer. One can’t go wrong with this romance.

Strengths…

  • Entertaining
  • Original storyline
  • Strong character chemistry
  • Engaging secondary characters

  • Available formats: ebook, paperback
  • File size: 909 KB
  • Print length: 322 pages
  • Genre: fiction
  • Themes: gun violence, women loving women, sapphic relationships, school shootings, Maine life, mature women, community, friendship, mental health, community support, aging, trauma, surviving trauma

The blurb from the publisher…

A school shooting is a nightmare that happens in other towns until it comes to yours.

A small town in Maine wakes up thinking it’s just another winter day, but a tragedy has been set in motion by dark secrets from the past and an unfortunate series of recent events. The horror that every town fears is about to come to Hobbs.

Dr. Liz Stolz is preparing to teach a gun safety class. Police Chief Brenda Harrison is heading to present her new conceal carry requirements to town manager, Olivia Enright. The principal of Hobbs Elementary, Courtney Barnes, and the new teacher, Susan Gedney, aren’t looking forward to an afterschool meeting about active shooter drills. On the other side of town, Sam McKinnon is finishing work on the school bathroom. Each woman will unwillingly play a critical role in the drama that is about to unfold. Hobbs will never be the same again.

My thoughts…

I have to put this out there on the front end of this review: If you are triggered by gun violence or childhood sexual abuse, this may not be the book for you. That being said, Extended Capacity is probably the best book of the Hobbs series. Graf handles these emotionally charged subjects with deliberate and dedicated care. She masterfully avoids embedding the narrative with gratuitously graphic details, instead relying on her skills as a true storyteller to pen this gripping tale. Make no mistake; this is an an intense, affecting story. Her bravery for putting it to paper should be commended. Then again, Graf has never been one to take the easy road when it comes to storytelling. She’s the consummate raconteur and her readers always benefit from her bold choices.

I can only speculate, but this might’ve been a bit cathartic for her to write. In December of 2012, Graf was working in her home office when a friend texted her: “Go to CNN. Your town is about to hit national news.” What she tuned into was the Sandy Hook massacre. Living only four miles away, she felt the devastation acutely. These weren’t strangers; she knew some of these families. Eleven years later, she still feels the raw emotions of this horrific event. For her, Extended Capacity was a way to show how school shootings impact not just the victims and their families, but the entire community.

Because Graf knows how devastating a mass shooting is to a tight-knit community, she brings a level of delicate realism to the storytelling that’s often hard to achieve in these types of storylines. Though many of the incidents described in the book are thinly disguised versions of what actually happened that horrible day, this is still an original work of fiction and she does a commendable job of maintaining a balanced sensitivity to the subject matter. Yes, the storytelling is vivid and believable, but never once does Graf sensationalize things. She uses what she’s already built in this series to drive the plot, namely the characters. They tell this story, and they do it beautifully. They are the reason readers care about Extended Capacity and why it works.

There were a couple of things that struck me while reading this book. First and foremost, Graf writes with authority and conviction. It’s obvious she researches the heck out of something before she incorporates it into the narrative. This is timely, relevant stuff. Building scenes via paper-thin research and guesswork falls flat every time and Graf knows it. She doesn’t bluff her way through this heavy-handed, hot subject matter. She does the work and creates relatable, reliable story worlds and characters. It drives reader engagement, making the narrative hard to turn away from.

Secondly, she masterfully uses character development as a tool for readers to gain perspective and insight. Doors to understanding and compassion are opened up with her carefully planned character arcs; readers connect with the story. Furthermore, this smart utilization of character development helps readers experience the story on a deeper level, making it feel more personal. Ultimately, these choices make the storytelling more meaningful and memorable, two words one can definitely use to describe Extended Capacity.

Lastly, she excels at writing stories with large ensembles, and it’s a thing of beauty. She knows how to insert the right character at the right time to advance the story. She does this wisely, picking her moments for characters to enter scenes. What they say and what they do pushes the narrative in positive ways, making it compelling as well as entertaining. Overall, it gives the narrative a depth and dimension that’s hard to find in a series that contains double-digit character numbers.

Final remarks…

Extended Capacity is an intense, gripping read and well worth the investment. It’s a well formulated and well constructed piece of fiction—maybe even one of Graf’s best. Either way, it’s certainly one of her finest in the series. The Hobb’s characters have come to mean so much to so many, and because they have, this story will stir things in its readers. Make no mistake; this is a story they won’t soon forget.

Strengths…

  • Well-written
  • Well-plotted
  • Well-paced
  • Excellent use of characters
  • Engaging storyline
  • Relevant and timely
